WhatsApp account safe in 2026: WhatsApp is used by over 500 million people in India every day. But as the app becomes more important for business, banking alerts, and family communication, it has also become a big target for scammers and hackers.
In this guide, I will walk you through the most important steps to keep your WhatsApp account completely safe. I have tested all these settings on my own Android phone.

1. Enable Two-Step Verification (The Most Important Step)
This is the single most powerful thing you can do right now. Two-step verification adds a 6-digit PIN that you set yourself. Even if a hacker gets your OTP, they cannot access your account without this PIN.
How to turn it on:
– Open WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Two-step verification
– Tap Enable
– Create a 6-digit PIN you will remember
– Add your email address (so you can recover if you forget the PIN)
Once this is ON, anyone trying to register your number on a new device will need this PIN. This alone stops 90% of account takeover attempts.

2. Check Your Linked Devices Right Now
Did you know someone could be reading all your messages on a laptop without you knowing?
WhatsApp Web allows up to 4 devices to be linked to your account at the same time. If you once used WhatsApp Web at a cyber cafe or a friend’s office, that session might still be active.
How to check:
– Open WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices
– You will see a list of all active sessions with the device name, browser, and location
– Tap on any session you do not recognise → Log Out
I recommend doing this check every month.
3. Control Who Can See Your Profile: WhatsApp account safe in 2026
By default, your profile photo, last seen, and status are visible to everyone. This is a privacy risk.
Go to Settings → Privacy and change:
– Last Seen & Online → My Contacts
– Profile Photo → My Contacts
– Status → My Contacts
– About → My Contacts
For extra safety, turn off “Read Receipts” so unknown senders cannot see when you read their messages.
4. Be Alert for This Common WhatsApp Scam
The most common scam in India right now works like this: you receive a WhatsApp message from an unknown number claiming to be from your bank or TRAI. They say your number will be blocked and ask you to forward a 6-digit OTP you just received.
Never forward that OTP to anyone. That OTP is the verification code for registering your WhatsApp on their device. The moment you share it, they take over your account.
Real banks and TRAI never contact you on WhatsApp to ask for codes.
5. Lock WhatsApp With Your Fingerprint
If your phone ever falls into the wrong hands, this setting prevents anyone from opening WhatsApp without your fingerprint.
Settings → Privacy → Fingerprint Lock → Turn On
You can set it to lock immediately or after 1 minute.
Final Tip: Report and Block Suspicious Numbers
If you receive a threatening or suspicious message, do not just delete it. Tap and hold the message → Report. This helps WhatsApp take action against scam accounts.
Staying safe on WhatsApp takes only 10 minutes to set up. Do it today.
